Writing Prompt #44

Writing Prompt #44: Start poem with “These are the things I no longer wish to understand”

These are the things I no longer wish to understand

Like how do someone walk into someone else home and shoot them at point-blank range

And not one juror or judge think this is wrong

Kudos to the brother and family for being strong

While the system continues to fuck us

These are the things I no longer wish to understand

Like how does your story get to even be believed

I bet he had a story but we can’t hear his, can we

And yet you cry like I’m supposed to feel pitty

I wish it was me

And if it was you

He would have life with no chance of parole

Can’t even be safe in your own home

Sitting around eating ice cream could get you shot by a four-year veteran cop

Who was so sleepy and tired that she didn’t realize she was in someone else’s home

These are the things I no longer wish to understand

These are the things I never want to understand

Black man, black man your days are numbered

Even if you do the right thing

A cop can still let their gun sing

Bullets hit your soul

Your blood turns cold

As the system continues to control

The truth will never unfold

Because our bodies are always left with bullet holes

These are the things I don’t ever wish to understand
